The CDB is a new program designed to assist low-income individuals with disabilities between 18 and 64. To qualify for the CDB, you must fulfill the eligibility criteria such as having a valid Disability Tax Credit (DTC) certificate. Additionally, you need to meet other criteria related to income and age.

The maximum annual benefit under the CDB is $2,400. Payments will be claimed through annual tax filings and distributed by the Canada Revenue Agency. The proposed regulations for the CDB were published in the Canada Gazette in June 2024.

The consultation period is open until September 23, 2024. Following the successful completion of the regulatory process, payments are expected to begin in July 2025. Remember that the final regulations may be adjusted based on public feedback.

Who is eligible for the Canada Disability Benefit?

As per the 2024 Budget, Canadians who possess a valid DTC certificate would be eligible to receive the Canada Disability Benefit. Therefore, in addition to meeting the income and age requirements, which range from 18 to 65, you must also be accepted for the DTC to be eligible.

To provide the benefit “as soon as practicable and to assure nationwide consistency of eligibility,” this eligibility requirement was chosen. Additionally, you have to be a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada.

A medical professional must certify that you undergo therapy to support critical function, have a severe and chronic impairment that results in a noteworthy restriction in one of the fields, or have significant limits in two or more categories for you to be eligible for the DTC.

How can I Apply for the Canada Disability Benefit?

The specific application procedure is still under wraps. But in line with the 2024 Budget, if you meet the requirements, you can apply by following the anticipated, step-by-step process that is listed below.

  • First, ensure you have a valid DTC certificate. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to apply for it. To be eligible for the CDB, one must first complete the DTC.
  • Once you have the DTC certificate, you can apply for the CDB. Navigate to the official website.
  • Fill out the form with valid details and provide relevant information about your disability and financial situation.
  • Attach all the required documents if needed.
  • After verifying your details submit your completed application to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). You can do this online through the CRA’s website or by mail.
  • The CRA will review your application and check your eligibility. If approved, you’ll receive the CDB payments as part of your annual tax filing.

Is There a Deadline for Submitting Your Application?

The deadline for submitting your Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) application is not explicitly mentioned by the officials. However, it’s advisable to apply as soon as possible once the program is officially launched.

If you miss the deadline for applying for the CDB, it’s essential to stay informed about any updates or extensions provided by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). While specific consequences for missing the deadline are not explicitly mentioned, timely application ensures you receive the benefit as soon as possible.

How Much Do You Expect to Receive from the New Disability Benefit from Canada?

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland unveiled the 2019 Canada Disability Benefit budget on April 16, 2024. The government is contributing a total of $6.1 billion over six years, plus an additional $1.4 billion for ongoing operational costs.

This money is intended to provide eligible claimants with a maximum annual benefit of $2,400, or $200 per month, or roughly $6.66 per day. Disability advocates from all across Canada expressed their dissatisfaction with the payment, pointing out that it would be insufficient to keep disabled citizens above the poverty level monthly.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer of Canada estimated that it might take up to $14,356 per person annually to close the gap between the current social assistance for people with disabilities and the poverty line.

When Will You Expect to Get Your New Canada Disability Benefit?

The Canada Disability Benefit is a proposed federal program that aims to provide financial support to eligible individuals with disabilities. As of now, it hasn’t been fully implemented.

The proposed benefit amount is up to $200  per month for eligible recipients.

However, this amount may be subject to change during the legislative process. To qualify for the benefit, you’ll need to meet specific eligibility criteria related to your disability and income. These details will be finalized once the program is officially launched.

The exact timeline for implementation remains uncertain. The government has expressed its commitment to introducing the benefit, but further legislative steps are required before it becomes available.

The government intends to send out the first CDB payments by July 2025, per the April 2024, announcement of the 2024 Budget. Keep an eye on official government announcements and updates to stay informed about the Canada Disability Benefit.
