A winter fuel payment provides you a payout of £250 to £600 to assist with your heating bills if you were born before September 25, 1957. Based on the eligibility people will automatically receive the payment in their bank account in November or December.

UK Winter Fuel Payment

An annual tax-free payment known as the Winter Fuel Payment is intended to assist elderly individuals in meeting their wintertime heating expenses. You may be eligible to receive between £250 and £600 to help with your heating bills if you were born before September 25, 1957.

For winter 2023-24, the payment includes an additional amount of between £150 and £300 to help with the cost of living. Most eligible recipients receive this payment automatically, but you can check if you need to claim if you haven’t received a letter. 

Who is eligible for winter fuel payment?

The eligibility requirements for winter fuel payment are given below.

  • You can receive the Winter Fuel Payment if you were born before 25 September 1957.
  • Candidates must live in the UK. 
  • The Winter Fuel Payment is available to non-UK residents in the following circumstances:
  • You relocated before January 1, 2021, to a nation that qualifies. 
  • You were born on or before September 25, 1957.
  • You possess an authentic and adequate connection to the United Kingdom – this encompasses having resided or employed there, as well as having relatives there.

Who is not eligible for winter fuel payment?

You won’t be qualified if you: 

  • have been receiving free medical care for over one year in a hospital
  • Require authorization to enter the UK and the terms of your leave grant you the inability to claim public funds.
  • You spent the entire week of September 18–24, 2023, incarcerated.
  • Are currently receiving Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) based on income, or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) based on income.

How much do you get in UK Winter Fuel Payment?

If you qualify, you should have received a letter in October or November indicating how much Winter Fuel Payment you will receive.

The amount you receive is determined by your birthdate and circumstances between September 18, 2023, and September 24, 2023. This is referred to as the qualifying week. Here are some circumstances are listed:

If you are living alone or someone living with you is not eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment You will receive either:

  • £500 if your birthday falls between September 25, 1943, and September 24, 1957. 
  • £600 for those born before September 25, 1943

If you receive none of the benefits, you will be compensated with either:

  • £250 if the person you live with was born on September 25, 1943, and the other was born on September 24, 1957. 
  • £250 if the person you reside with was born before September 25, 1943, but you were born between September 25, 1943, and September 24, 1957. 
  • £350 if the individual you currently reside with was born between September 25, 1943, and September 24, 1957, but you were born before that date.
  • £300 if both you and your housemate were born before September 25, 1943.

If you and your spouse split up the benefits claims, One of you will be compensated with either: 

  • £500 if both of you were born on September 25, 1943, or September 24, 1957. 
  • £600 if either of you was born before September 25, 1943.

What if I haven’t received a letter for the UK Winter Fuel Payment?

If the individuals qualify, most people receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically. They will receive a letter in September. If you haven’t received a letter about the Winter Fuel Payment, you can still check if you’re eligible and make a claim. 

You can claim the Winter Fuel Payment by calling the Winter Fuel Payment Centre at 0800 731 0160 or by filling in an online form. 

To complete your claim, you’ll need your National Insurance number, bank details, and, if applicable, the date of your marriage. If you live abroad, there’s a different process for claiming, so be sure to follow the appropriate procedure.

When will I expect to get my payout for winter fuel payment?

Most Winter Fuel Payments are made automatically in November or December. You should have received a letter telling you how much you’ll get and which bank account it will be paid into.

It is usually the same account as your State Pension or other benefits. If you didn’t receive a letter or the payment hasn’t been deposited into your account by 26 January of the qualifying year I recommend contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

What if my bank details have changed?

If your bank details have changed, you should promptly update them with the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
